What Drago is

A Lessona mill from the modern Biella generation.

Umberto and Laura Drago founded Drago in 1973 in Lessona, in the Biella province of Piedmont. Compared with the centuries old Biella mills (Vitale Barberis Canonico founded 1663 in Pratrivero, Fratelli Piacenza founded 1733 in Pollone, Lanificio Guabello founded 1815 in Mongrando, Reda founded 1865 in Valle Mosso, Lanificio Cerruti founded 1881 in Biella city), Drago is the youngest of the major Biella mills by several generations. The 1973 founding gave Drago a foundational advantage: modern weaving and finishing technology was already available, and the mill built around it from day one.

The Drago family expanded the operation in subsequent decades. In 1993 the family acquired Lanificio Fintes, expanding the structure and adding a separate fabrics division to the operation. In 2001 Fintes was formally incorporated into the Drago Group, consolidating the Drago Lanificio in Biella brand under a single mill identity.

Today the mill runs a vertical fully integrated operation in Lessona, with spinning, weaving, and finishing on the same site. Annual production reaches about 1.7 million meters of cloth, exported worldwide. Drago is widely cited in trade press as a tailor's mill for the consistency of the cloth across runs, supplying many of the Italian RTW houses alongside the bespoke trade.

How Drago cloth is built

Extremely fine yarn across summer weight and year round suiting.

Drago is known across the trade for the extremely fine yarn that characterizes the suiting library. The trade press describes Drago cloth as carrying a softness that has to be touched to be believed; the fineness of the yarn is the differentiator across the mill range. The cloth runs in Super 130s through Super 180s in standard suiting weights, with summer weight specialty bunches at the lighter end of the range.

The Drago specialty is lightweight summer wools and high twist year round cloth. The summer weight library covers the warm weather commission across the harvest wedding register, the Mediterranean and California summer business commission, and the resort rotation. The high twist bunches handle the year round travel resilient register, with wrinkle resistance built into the cloth construction.

The vertical Lessona operation handles the full production cycle on site. Spinning, weaving, and finishing all happen at the Drago mill rather than across third party operations, which is why the cloth reads consistent across runs and why the Italian RTW houses rely on Drago for production consistency. The mill exports 1.7 million meters a year to clothiers and bespoke operations worldwide.

Where Drago cloth fits in your wardrobe

The summer commission, and the year round lightweight register.

Drago fits the wardrobe that wants Italian summer weight cloth or lightweight year round suiting. The summer bunches handle the California valley floor at 85 degrees, the Wine Country harvest wedding circuit through September and October, the southern California business rotation through the warm months, and the destination ceremony register where the cloth has to perform through long afternoon heat without surrender.

The high twist year round bunches handle the travel resilient executive commission across coast to coast and international rotations. The cloth carries less weight than the standard Biella worsted register and recovers cleanly from a garment bag day. Drago is the cloth Sam reaches for when the brief specifies lightweight or summer specifically; the year round heavier rotation lands more often at the other Biella mills.

Drago sits at upper mid per meter pricing. Comparable to Zegna Trofeo mainline and Lanificio Cerruti standard worsteds across Italian business suiting construction. The summer weight and high twist specialty bunches push slightly higher. The mill works across bespoke and made to measure tiers; the differentiator is the fine yarn fineness and the lightweight Italian specialty register.

Frequently asked

What clients ask before they commission Drago.

What is Drago?
Drago is an Italian wool mill founded 1973 in Lessona, in the Biella province of Piedmont, by Umberto and Laura Drago. The mill operates a vertical fully integrated operation, with spinning through finishing on the same Lessona site. Drago expanded the business in 1993 with the acquisition of Lanificio Fintes, and in 2001 Fintes was formally incorporated into the Drago Group, consolidating the Drago Lanificio in Biella brand. Today the mill produces about 1.7 million meters of cloth a year, exported worldwide. Drago is widely cited in trade press as a tailor's mill, known for the consistency of the cloth across runs and the extremely fine yarn that characterizes the suiting library.
Is Drago wool made in the same town as Zegna?
No. Drago is based in Lessona, a Biella province municipality distinct from Trivero, where Ermenegildo Zegna operates the Trivero mill complex. Both mills sit within the wider Biella province in Piedmont, in the foothills of the Italian Alps, but they are in different municipalities. The Biella region historically holds several distinct mill towns: Trivero (Zegna), Pratrivero (VBC and Carlo Barbera), Pollone (Fratelli Piacenza), Mongrando (Lanificio Guabello), Valle Mosso (Reda), and Lessona (Drago) among them. Each municipality has slightly different water sources and finishing traditions from the others.
What is the difference between Drago and Zegna?
Both are Italian wool mills in the Biella province with vertical fully integrated production from raw fiber through finished cloth. Zegna (founded 1910 in Trivero) sits at upper mid to upper luxury per meter pricing with Trofeo as the year round business workhorse and 12 Mile at super fine fineness. Drago (founded 1973 in Lessona) is the youngest major Biella mill and specializes in lightweight summer wools and high twist year round suiting. Drago sits at upper mid pricing comparable to Zegna Trofeo mainline. For the full Zegna register, see the dedicated Ermenegildo Zegna mill page.
Is Drago worth the investment over less expensive options?
For the summer commission or the lightweight year round wardrobe, yes. Drago specializes in fine yarn lightweight suiting that sits in a register that the heavier Biella worsted mills do not concentrate on. The cloth supplies many of the Italian RTW houses on consistency alone, and the bespoke trade reaches for Drago when the brief calls for an Italian summer weight or a light hand year round. For the standard business worsted commission where year round durability is the priority, Vitale Barberis Canonico Perennial or Zegna Trofeo sits more practically inside the brief. See the comparable Biella heritage register at Vitale Barberis Canonico.
