What Holland and Sherry is

A Savile Row merchant house across two centuries of trade.

Holland and Sherry was founded in 1836 by Stephen George Holland and Frederick Sherry as woollen merchants at 10 Old Bond Street, London. The house relocated to Golden Square in 1886, then the epicenter of the London woollen merchanting trade, and moved its registered head office to Savile Row in 1982 where it remains today. In 1968 Holland and Sherry acquired Lowe Donald, a Scottish cloth merchant based in Peebles in the Scottish Borders, and consolidated its UK distribution to a purpose built warehouse there. The Peebles warehouse carries a working library at warehouse scale across Yorkshire worsted and Scottish tweed today and serves as the physical anchor of the international cloth distribution network.

Holland and Sherry has been part of Individualized Apparel Group, the US holding company that also owns Tom James Company and Oxxford Clothes, since the March 2003 acquisition. The merchant house model differentiates Holland and Sherry from primary mills like Loro Piana, Zegna, or Vitale Barberis Canonico: rather than spinning and weaving in house, Holland and Sherry commissions cloth from Yorkshire worsted mills and Scottish woolen mills, finishes it against a Holland and Sherry standard, and warehouses and books it for the international bespoke trade. The advantage of the merchant model is breadth; the Holland and Sherry library covers worsted, tweed, flannel, cashmere, and specialty cloth across registers that no single mill could economically span.

The house also runs Holland and Sherry Interiors, a separate division that supplies cloth and leather to luxury residential and contract interiors. The apparel side serves the Savile Row bespoke trade, the international tailoring market, and the made to measure cloth supply chain.

How Holland and Sherry cloth is built

Yorkshire worsted and Scottish tweed, finished against a Savile Row standard.

Crispaire is the foundational Holland and Sherry cloth and the reason the house carries the traveling executive book worldwide. The construction is a 2 ply yarn spun to a 36/2nm count in a plain weave worsted, finished at 280 to 310 grams per meter (9 to 10 oz) on standard weight per the Holland and Sherry catalog (HS2433). The high twist construction gives the cloth a firm, round, crisp handle and strong crease recovery, which is why the cloth holds up across a coast to coast travel day where a softer business worsted would arrive wrinkled.

Sherry Tweed sits at the country and odd jacket register, with the traditional Scottish tweed weave and a softer hand than the Crispaire construction. Perennial Classics and Target cover the year round business worsted register. Airesco, the lightest summer bunch, runs at warm weather weight for July and August commissions, and the Permanent Style review archive carries detailed coverage on Airesco specifically as a summer worsted.

The Holland and Sherry library extends across cashmere blends, flannel, hopsack, linen, and formal cloth for tuxedos and morning suits. The specialty register carries the higher end business and evening commissions. The breadth of the library is the merchant house advantage; on a single commission Sam can pair a Crispaire business suit with a Sherry Tweed odd jacket and a barathea evening jacket out of the same cloth book.

"Crispaire is the cloth I reach for when the client asks for one suit that handles 65 to 85 degrees and a coast to coast travel day. The 2 ply 36/2nm high twist plain weave sheds creases on its own, and the Peebles finish reads sharper than the cloth weight suggests. The Sherry Tweed odd jacket is the companion piece; the country register that the Italian sport coats can't quite reach."

Where Holland and Sherry cloth fits in your wardrobe

The traveling business register, and the country jacket.

Crispaire anchors the traveling business commission. The cloth handles the calendar of the executive who flies twice a week, lives in hotel suites and conference rooms, and needs the suit to arrive as if it had hung in the closet overnight rather than crossed two time zones in a garment bag. The same construction handles the California summer at 85 degrees and the same summer evening at 65 without changing weights.

Sherry Tweed and the tweed library carry the country club blazer, the autumn odd jacket, and the country house weekend register. Perennial Classics and Target sit at the year round business worsted commission tier. The Holland and Sherry tuxedo cloth (barathea, midnight blue worsted, ivory formal hopsack) carries the black tie evening register. The cashmere blend bunches extend the register into the dressier commission and the cooler shoulder months.

Investment

Per garment pricing follows the service tier.

Holland and Sherry sits at the upper mid tier of the mill library on the per meter scale, comparable to Zegna Trofeo across business worsteds and above Vitale Barberis Canonico Perennial. Crispaire is the foundational commission, with specialty bunches pushing higher. The merchant house breadth means Holland and Sherry cloth works across the bespoke and made to measure tiers depending on commission scope.

Who commissions Holland and Sherry cloth

The traveling executive, and the country wardrobe.

Holland and Sherry Crispaire commissions concentrate among traveling executives, international business leaders, and clients with multi city calendars where one suit has to handle two climates. The cloth carries the Tuesday morning Manhattan board meeting and the Friday afternoon Palo Alto strategy session inside the same garment bag. The Sherry Tweed and country tweed library carries the country club blazer book and the autumn rotation.

The wedding circuit through the Napa and Sonoma harvest months carries Crispaire and Sherry Tweed grooms for ceremonies where the British register reads correctly: country house weddings, estate venues, and the rustic register of the harvest rotation. Sam dresses wedding suits in Holland and Sherry cloth for grooms commissioning at the bespoke tier across the Wine Country circuit. The traveling executive book rolls into executive wardrobe planning cleanly, with Crispaire carrying the year round rotation. The construction detail at the upper tier sits on the bespoke tier rather than made to measure.

Frequently asked

What clients ask before they commission Holland and Sherry.

What is Holland and Sherry?
Holland and Sherry is a British cloth merchant house founded in 1836 by Stephen George Holland and Frederick Sherry as woollen merchants at 10 Old Bond Street, London. The house moved to Golden Square in 1886, the center of the London woollen merchanting trade in the Victorian era, and relocated its registered head office to Savile Row in 1982 where it remains. In 1968 Holland and Sherry acquired the Scottish cloth merchant Lowe Donald of Peebles in the Scottish Borders and consolidated its UK distribution to a purpose built warehouse there, which carries an extensive working library of bunch books and finished cloth across Yorkshire worsted and Scottish tweed today. The house operates as a merchant rather than a primary weaver, commissioning cloth from Yorkshire worsted mills and Scottish woolen mills and finishing the result against a Holland and Sherry standard.
What is the difference between Holland and Sherry and Scabal?
Both are British registered cloth houses serving the Savile Row bespoke trade and the international tailoring market, with distribution structures in Yorkshire and Scotland. Holland and Sherry sits closer to the traditional Yorkshire worsted and Scottish tweed register, with Crispaire and Sherry Tweed as the headline bunches across the year round business and the country tweed register. Scabal pushes further into specialty cloth (super 200s wools, gold thread, diamond chip cloth) and the dressier evening register. The Holland and Sherry book reads more traditional British worsted; the Scabal book reads more luxury specialty. For the Italian register comparison, see the dedicated Vitale Barberis Canonico mill page.
Which season is Holland and Sherry cloth right for?
Crispaire is the year round answer. The 2 ply yarn at 36/2nm count plain weave construction sheds creases through a long travel day, and the cloth weighs 280 to 310 grams per meter (9 to 10 oz) per the Holland and Sherry catalog, which holds up across 65 to 85 degree weather without complaint. Sherry Tweed runs the autumn, winter, and country register on the Scottish tweed side. Perennial Classics and Target sit at year round business worsted weight. The Airesco summer bunch sits at the lightest end for July and August commissions.
Is Holland and Sherry worth the investment over less expensive options?
For the traveling executive who needs one suit that crosses seasons, yes. Crispaire commissions higher per meter than Vitale Barberis Canonico Perennial, but the high twist plain weave construction means a Crispaire suit sheds creases across a coast to coast travel day where a Perennial suit would arrive wrinkled. The trade off is breathability; Crispaire reads slightly less breathable than the lightest summer high twists, but the year round register is the reason clients reach for it. For the year round Italian comparison, see the cloth register at Vitale Barberis Canonico.
