What Scabal is

A Brussels house that owns its own Yorkshire mill.

Otto Hertz founded Scabal in Brussels in 1938 as a continental cloth merchant. The name is an acronym for Societe Commerciale Anglo Belgo Allemande Luxembourgeoise, and the founding proposition was a bridge between continental European tailoring and the British weaving tradition that defined the upper end of suiting cloth before the war. The Brussels operation survived the war years and the rebuilding of European tailoring across the 1950s and 1960s, and by the 1970s the house had expanded operations to include its own weaving mill in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.

The Huddersfield acquisition mattered. Most continental cloth houses operated as merchants, commissioning weaving from third party mills. Scabal owning its own Huddersfield mill gives the cloth a unified hand across runs, with the same dyers, spinners, weavers, and finishers behind every bolt regardless of bunch. Yorkshire worsted heritage runs deep through Huddersfield (Holland and Sherry distributes Yorkshire and Scottish mill cloth from Peebles; Dormeuil weaves in Huddersfield as well), and Scabal sits inside that tradition while the Brussels design office writes the bunch program.

Scabal opened a Savile Row presence around 1975 at No. 12 Savile Row and celebrated 50 years on the row in 2025. The London showroom is part flagship and part dressing house; the brand has dressed Winston Churchill, Marlon Brando, and a long roster of statesmen, royalty, and film figures across nearly a century. The current operation remains family controlled with headquarters in Brussels.

How Scabal cloth is built

Super 220s wool, and the specialty bunch library.

Scabal sits at the upper end of the wool fineness scale. The core suiting library covers Super 150s through Super 220s, with the Super 200s and 220s bunches reaching the upper limit of what wool can do on its own before the register shifts into blend territory with silk, cashmere, or rare animal fiber. The hand reads as continental finish over Yorkshire structure: the Huddersfield mill builds the cloth firm and structured, the Brussels finishing softens it into the Scabal register that neither pure Italian mills nor pure British mills quite reach.

Beyond the core suiting library, Scabal is known for the specialty bunch register that no other major mill pursues at the same level. Diamond Chip is woven with fragments of real diamonds spun into the yarn, adding subtle glimmer under direct light. Gold Treasure carries 24 carat gold thread woven into superfine wool. Royal Sapphire and Lapis Lazuli extend the precious particulate program. Super Royal Vicuna pulls the rare fiber register into the Scabal bunch family. The specialty bunches are technical theater as much as tailoring cloth, and Scabal commissions them for clients who want the suit to carry a story.

The travel and business worsted bunches across Diplomatic, Atlantis, Sienna, Concept, Premiere, and Avenue cover the year round business register. The Scabal Travel Capsule bunch handles the executive who needs the suit to cross time zones without surrender. Across every bunch, the Huddersfield mill writes the structure and the Brussels finishing writes the hand; the result is a cloth that drapes softer than the Yorkshire register but holds structure longer than the Italian.

"Scabal cloth carries something neither pure Italian nor pure British. The Brussels finish lays over the Huddersfield mill and you get continental softness over Yorkshire structure. Diamond Chip is theater more than tailoring; some clients want the suit to carry the story. The Super 220s sit at the edge of what wool can do before you need silk or cashmere in the blend."

Where Scabal cloth fits in your wardrobe

The signal commission, across business, evening, and ceremony.

Scabal carries the register where the cloth itself signals. Super 200s and Super 220s business commissions read at a fineness tier that other clients in the room will recognize on sight. Diamond Chip, Gold Treasure, and the specialty bunches belong to the evening ceremony register, the rarest commission moment, or the wedding suit that has to carry a story of its own. The Travel Capsule bunch handles the senior executive who lives across time zones and needs the suit to recover overnight.

For the year round business rotation the core Diplomatic, Atlantis, and Sienna bunches sit inside the Scabal register at standard worsted weights. The Royal Riviera and Royal Sapphire bunches push into the dressier register; the standard Super 150s sits at upper mid fineness, comparable to Holland and Sherry Crispaire and Zegna Trofeo across the same construction tier.

Investment

Per garment pricing follows the service tier.

Scabal sits at upper luxury on per meter pricing across the mill library. Diamond Chip, Gold Treasure, and the specialty precious particulate bunches sit in a separate tier entirely; the cloth alone reaches the four figure to five figure range before construction. The Super 200s and Super 220s core suiting bunches commission at the bespoke tier; standard Super 150s bunches work across both bespoke and upper made to measure.

Bespoke tailoring

From$5,000

Scabal cloth typically commissions at the bespoke tier. Diamond Chip, Gold Treasure, Super 220s, and Super Royal Vicuna sit at the higher end of the bespoke range. The specialty precious particulate bunches sit in their own tier.

Who commissions Scabal cloth

The signal register, across the wardrobe.

Scabal commissions concentrate among senior executives whose wardrobes have moved past foundational and into signal, the connoisseur client who recognizes the cloth in the room before the suit is described, and the wedding or formal commission where the cloth itself carries the conversation. The audience overlaps with the Loro Piana wedding suit register and the upper executive commission; the differentiator is the specialty bunch library and the Brussels and Huddersfield register that no Italian mill matches.

Diamond Chip, Gold Treasure, and the precious particulate bunches commission rarely and on specific moments. The bespoke wedding suits in Scabal cloth sit at the rarest commission tier across the Wine Country harvest circuit and beyond. Multi piece executive commissions roll into executive wardrobe planning when the senior executive book widens past a single suit. The construction detail at the upper tier sits on the bespoke tier rather than made to measure. For the sibling continental house comparison, see the Paris register at Dormeuil, which also weaves in Huddersfield but writes a different design book over the same mill tradition.

Frequently asked

What clients ask before they commission Scabal.

What is Scabal?
Scabal is a Belgian cloth house and weaving mill founded in Brussels in 1938 by Otto Hertz. The name stands for Societe Commerciale Anglo Belgo Allemande Luxembourgeoise, reflecting the founders intent to bridge continental cloth merchanting with British weaving heritage. In the 1970s Scabal acquired its own weaving mill in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, the region long synonymous with the worlds finest woollen textiles, and the Brussels and Huddersfield split has defined the house ever since. Scabal opened on Savile Row around 1975 and celebrated 50 years on the row in 2025. The brand has dressed Winston Churchill, Marlon Brando, and a long roster of heads of state and film figures across almost a century of operation.
What is Diamond Chip cloth?
Diamond Chip is a Scabal signature cloth woven with fragments of real diamonds spun into the yarn. The particulate adds a subtle glimmer under direct light and marks the cloth as one of the technical extravagances that Scabal is known for. The wool base is super fine; the diamond is the headline. Diamond Chip belongs to the same Scabal specialty bunch family as Gold Treasure (24 carat gold thread woven into superfine wool), Royal Sapphire, and Lapis Lazuli. These bunches are theater as much as tailoring; commissions are reserved for clients who want the suit to carry a story.
What is the difference between Scabal and Holland and Sherry?
Both houses operate across the Brussels and Huddersfield and London triangle that defines the upper end of the continental European cloth trade. Holland and Sherry is a Savile Row registered merchant house founded 1836, commissioning cloth from Yorkshire and Scottish mills and finishing it against a Holland and Sherry standard. Scabal owns its own Huddersfield weaving mill alongside the Brussels HQ, which means Scabal cloth carries a more unified hand across runs. Scabal also operates the specialty bunch register (Diamond Chip, Gold Treasure) that Holland and Sherry does not pursue. For the full Holland and Sherry register, see the dedicated Holland and Sherry mill page.
Is Scabal worth the investment over less expensive options?
For clients who want signal alongside cloth quality, yes. Scabal commissions higher per meter than Vitale Barberis Canonico Perennial or Zegna Trofeo across standard business worsted construction; the differentiator is the Brussels and Huddersfield register, the recognizability of the brand among connoisseurs, and the specialty bunch library. For an everyday business commission where the cloth register matters less than the working life of the suit, Vitale Barberis Canonico sits more practically inside the brief. The Scabal commission lands when the client wants the cloth itself to carry the conversation. See the comparable register at Vitale Barberis Canonico.
